The year was 2003, and I still lived in Ottawa, Canada then. Many months of life change had led me to seeking out new experiences and one that found me was a Kundalini yoga class in September of that year, taught in a candlelit activity room with a beautifully-painted domed ceiling at the top of an apartment building. I didn’t know what to expect before I got there, and I soon found myself grateful for all that had brought me to the class. I got to stretch out muscles that needed it and build strength in my abdominal muscles, my back, my arms, and my mind. I made new friends. I learned how to do something new. I calmed the heck down during those 90 minutes of class time and in the hours and days after, and I found a way of giving myself something that was just for me. Along with the exercise and meditation benefits, it was time I spent away from the day-to-day worries of an increasingly frantic world. And so I kept going to class. (more…)
